Unveiled in 2021 in Ajman Corniche, MAYDAN ALBARRAGAH stands as a contemporary installation, masterfully crafted by KHALID SHAFAR in collaboration with Fen Ajman. This installation serves as both a visual landmark and a cultural narrative that bridges the past with the present.
Drawing inspiration from a cherished childhood memory—the simple joy of making paper boats—this artwork mirrors the traditional Emirati craftsmanship of dhow building, a skill deeply intertwined with Ajman’s dhow-making heritage. MAYDAN ALBARRAGAH effectively fuses the playful innocence of youth with the venerable spirit of adventure that defined the lives of Emirati ancestors. The installation features a dual representation, combining the simple paper boat and the iconic Albarragah dhow. It is artistically wrapped and unwrapped, revealing a story of endurance, discovery, and heritage.
Positioned strategically at the centre of a bustling roundabout, it enhances the aesthetic appeal of the locale whilst serving as a poignant reminder of the region’s rich maritime history. Oriented towards the sea and set against the backdrop of Ajman’s skyline, the monument is dramatically poised as if launching into the vast waters, symbolising the continuous journey of cultural legacy and the relentless pursuit of progress.
