At the Meet d3 event in 2015, organised by Dubai Design District, KHALID SHAFAR in partnership with the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), presented CITY’S, a seating installation designed to reflect the dynamic diversity of Dubai’s creative community. The event was a platform to celebrate regional creativity and preview the potential of Dubai as a burgeoning hub of design.
CITY’S, extending nearly five metres in length, was crafted to accommodate an array of individuals – from children and adults to the elderly, ensuring accessibility and comfort for all. CITY’s tiered heights catered to various user needs, making it a functional seating installation for public interaction and engagement.
Set against the backdrop of the iconic Dubai skyline, the installation was a testament to the inclusivity and vibrancy of the d3 area. The installation was constructed from thermally-modified American ash, providing durability and a sleek finish. Its structure incorporated building blocks in standardised sizes, symbolising the ongoing development within the district and adding a tactile, industrial contrast to the smooth wooden exterior. This installation not only served as a practical seating area but also as a social conduit, encouraging community members to gather, interact, and forge connections in a shared space, mirroring the diverse and dynamic nature of Dubai itself.
