At Dubai Design Week 2017, KHALID SHAFAR, in collaboration with Lasvit, unveiled SILENT CALL, an installation that integrated time and motion for purposes transcending mere aesthetic appeal. The installation epitomised the perpetual symbiosis between art and religious devotion, reflecting deep-rooted cultural narratives.
Designed to resonate within various settings, from hotel lobbies to transport hubs, this adaptable installation was not only programmable to signal Islamic prayer times but also to mark significant moments of the day, such as meal or break times. It featured a sophisticated system calibrated to match the evolution of the sky, seamlessly shifting its hues from dawn to dusk, bringing the dynamic beauty of the outdoors indoors. This functionality, coupled with variable light intensities, adapted throughout the day to cater to the ambient needs of different environments.
Echoing the architectural heritage of Islam, SILENT CALL drew inspiration from the significance of the number five in Islam, referencing the majestic domes of five iconic mosques across the UAE, Russia, Malaysia, Germany, and Denmark. These domes were artistically reimagined and transformed into elegant silhouettes that formed the glass components of the installation. Each dome was thoughtfully resized and arranged in an inverted composition to optimise both functionality and visual impact, making the installation a beacon of cultural dialogue and modern design.
